Cedar Rapids runner Chris Wolfe is off on his fourth running vacation, blogging every day at http://runnershighheartland.wordpress.com/
Here is an excerpt from Day 4 of his trip:
It has always been a personal rule to stay away from politics and religion, when it comes to my blog. I will continue to refrain from any political opinion, but it's virtually impossible not to mention religion at some level after a run through and around the University of Notre Dame.
Before taking off for this trip, I had sought out and was given some route ideas. Regardless, my main focus was going to be set on the campus. And even though I tried to get out and hit the suggested St. Mary's trails, the campus is where I stayed … and I can't remember the last time my legs felt that good.
Parking in a lot directly in front of Notre Dame Stadium and the Joyce Center, I laced up and started out. My easy warm-up pace took me directly south and onto Angela Boulevard. Taking a left, I continued at that easy pace for a couple of blocks until I came to the Main Entrance and Notre Dame Avenue.
A large cemetery is to the immediate left but I paid no attention – my sites were set on straight down the road and to the golden dome of the Main Building. Trees lined the street and I could see the movement of students off into the distance. I picked up my pace going from road to grass to sidewalk and back to road. I am quite decisive.
... I found myself in a beautifully shaded area in front of Main. Its gold dome and statue of Mary, which stood atop, were shining bright in the sun. Down below, a statue of Christ stood with his arms open. He is depicted in that manner, a lot. Photos taken and I moved on.
