New rate rules, restrictions to be set for Cedar Rapids cab drivers
Jun. 15, 2011 12:13 pm
The City Council this week approved an update to the city's taxi ordinance that will allow cab drivers and firms to charge reduced rates, but will set a maximum rate to prevent price gouging.
The city ordinance had set fares without the ability to charge reduced fares.
The council this week also set the maximum fare at what had been the current fare level, $3.50 at the start of a cab ride and $3 per mile of travel.
The new ordinance also ups the minimum liability insurance protection for cabs from $250,000 to $500,000, a fact that some cab drivers have objected to and have told council members it will cost drivers more money.
