Shimek Jr., Paul
Paul Shimek Jr., 94, a resident of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, passed away there Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial, with military honors: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to service time Wednesday at the chapel.
Surviving to honor his memory are his daughter, Lisa See of Arizona; two brothers, Robert Shimek of Cedar Rapids and Edward Shimek of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a sister, Mary Holland; and brothers, George, Frank, John and Henry Shimek.
Paul was born Feb. 3, 1916, in Cedar Rapids, to Paul and Hattie (Buehler) Shimek Sr. Sgt. Paul Shimek served in the U.S. Army during World War II. His tour included the North Africa campaign with General Patton, first wave of the Omaha Beach Normandy invasion with the first division 16th infantry, Battle of the Bulge, and with the first infantry crossing the Rhine River into Germany. He received two Silver Stars and one Bronze Star. Paul was employed as a welder at Iowa Manufacturing from 1949 to 1979.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
