Developers of NewBohemia Station will break ground Friday for the $4 million mixed-use building at 1028 Third St. SE in Cedar Rapids.
The four-story, 14-unit apartment building, next door to NewBo City Market, will have first floor retail and second floor commercial space. The third and fourth floors will have one- and two-bedroom apartments, each equipped with a balcony and washer and dryer.
NewBohemia Station will have 6,160 square feet of office space on the second floor. The project also will have 21 on-site parking stalls for residential and commercial tenants.
Construction of NewBohemia Station will begin immediately. It is scheduled for completion in December, with commercial and residential tenants moving in after the first of next year.
'We are excited about creating something that will last for generations and provide positive results for all residents of our city,” said Craig Byers, one of the members of the development team, in a news release.
NewBohemia Station will be constructed on the former Brosh Chapel site. The city purchased and demolished the flood-damaged funeral home as part of its flood recovery buyout program.
The Cedar Rapids City Council approved a 10-year, 100 percent property tax break for the project.
In August 2014, Craig Byers and his father, Scott Byers, told the city that they had been joined by investors Kory and Kevin Nanke and another party in the development of NewBohemia Station.
