Frederic Gene "Fred" Templer, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, June 25, 2017, in his home. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 3, at St. Jude's Catholic Church with Father Mark Reasoner presiding. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW. Visitation will also be one hour before services Monday at the church. Private family inurnment will be at a later date in Forevergreen Cemetery in Jewell.
Frederic was born April 27, 1930, in Jewell, the son of Archie and Helen Marie (Weinke) Templer. He graduated from Randall High School and later attended Area 11 College (Kirkwood Community College), where he received a journeyman plumber license. Fred was united to marriage to Marian Lois Chalma. She later died from complications of polio. Fred was united in marriage to Doris Jeanne (Doolittle) Melvin on Sept. 19, 1955. He worked as a plumber in the maintenance department at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, until his retirement in 1993. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, working on classic cars, including Model A's, and most of all, spending time with his family. He was an active member of HawkA Model A Ford Club, AACA Car Club, Eagles and Chrysler Club, as well as St. Jude's Catholic Church since 1964.
Fred is survived by his wife of over 61 years, Doris Jeanne; his children, Shareen "Sherry" Melvin (John Kaylor), Clyde Melvin (Sue Mihal), Debra Schoneman (Kirk Schatzle), Pam (Doug) Mollenhauer and Gene Templer; grandchildren, Dawn Scranton (Tim Long), Michael (Melissa) Scranton, Matthew (Sarah) Melvin, Scott (Holly) Mihal, Kelly Mihal, Claire Schatzle (Chris Kelleher), Andrew Schoneman, Maggie Schatzle (Charles Mollenhauer), Jacob Schoneman, Jerod Mollenhauer and Lindsey Mollenhauer; seven great-grandchildren, Tristan, Johnathan, Sidonia, Tanner, Cael, Avari and Kiera; as well as his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents; his brother, James (Minnie) Templer; sisters, Lorraine (Miff) Romsey, Dorothy (Don) Robertson and Joyce (Charles) Wild; grandson, Heath Mihal; son-in-law, George Schoneman; and a former son-in-law, Nels Scranton.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established and contributions may be directed to the family.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff at the Hospice of Mercy and to the caregivers for their loving care for Fred and his family.
