Geraldine Mary Zach, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, May 9, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha after a long illness. Services will be at Teahen Funeral Home at a later date.
Geraldine is survived by her husband of 60 years, Robert; two sons, Dean (Susan) of Central City and Doug (Jean) of Cedar Rapids; three daughters, Susan (Kyle) Elsom of LaGrange, Ky., Charlene (Brian) Joens of Des Moines and Sandra (Victor) Brown of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren, Lindsay, Heather, Michael, Emily, Marie (Chris), Peter, David, Amber (Mark), Cole (Sally), Libby (Peter), and Callie; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Marvin (Bev) Pospisil of Hiawatha.
Her son, David, preceded her in death in 1993.
Geraldine was born July 24, 1931, in rural Fairfax, the daughter of George and Albia (Ceynar) Pospisil. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1949 and married Robert Zach on Sept. 12, 1950, in Cedar Rapids. Geraldine worked hard all of her life at various jobs but her favorite job was that of house manager at Asbury House Assisted Living.
Geraldine enjoyed spending time with family and friends, camping, fishing and cooking delicious meals for all. She was tireless, meeting the needs of her large family, working full time and growing a plentiful garden. She was an advocate on behalf of people with disabilities through her involvement in Arc of Linn County.
Geraldine was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. We celebrate her life and will miss her greatly.
