Von McConnell, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, May 9, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital. Services at 1 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Entombment with military rites at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Lillian; two sons, Richard (Chris) and Ron (Angie), all of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Patricia (Dave) Cline of Norway; two brothers, Erwin (Dixie) and Dwight (Vicki), all of Cedar Rapids; and five sisters, Alberta (Dale) Stanek of Cedar Rapids, Marcene (Jim) Powers of Albia, Dorothy Adamson of Salina, Kan., Adella (Ron) Powder of Arkansas City, Kan., and Alice Rogers of Oskaloosa. He also is survived by eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Roberta McConnell; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Junior and Virgil and his twin, Don; and three sisters, Thelma, Velma and Doris.
Von was born March 2, 1931, in Fremont, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Hazel McBeth McConnell. He married Lillian Schutzman on Jan. 15, 1952, in Cedar Rapids. Von was an over-the-road truck driver for more than 40 years. He drove for several local trucking firms and retired from Heartland Express in 1995 after more than 12 years of service.
Von was mechanically inclined. He liked to tinker with cars and could fix most anything. He enjoyed the outdoors, WWF Wrestling, old Western movies, and he loved dogs. Von proudly served in the Marines and was a wonderful husband, father, brother and grandfather whose memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed.
