A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Opal Mercer, 95, of Washington, formerly of Springville and Kalona, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Halcyon House in Washington with Father Bernie Weir officiating. Burial will be held before the memorial
Mass at 10 a.m. Friday at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. Opal Mercer died Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, at Halcyon House in Washington.
A memorial fund has been established for Pleasantview Home, Halcyon House, Kalona Public Library and Hospice of Washington County.
Opal Kathleen (Miner) Mercer was born June 17, 1919, in Anamosa, Iowa, the daughter of Algie and Marjorie (Livingston) Miner. She was united in marriage to Robert Mercer on July 1, 1947, in Clarence, Mo. She worked as a sales clerk for a variety of stores, including Killian's, Woolworth's and the grocery store in Springville. She also cooked at the high school in Springville.
Survivors include two children, Roger (Tana) Mercer of El Dorado Hills, Calif., and Phyllis (Mark) Casper of Kalona; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
