Anna Melick Mumford passed away Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, at the Meth-Wick Community, where she had lived for nearly 10 years. There will be a family service in Toledo, Ohio, at a later date.
Anna was born June 11, 1916, to Frank Melick and Etta Conard Melick on the family farm near Appleton, Ohio. She attended school in Utica, Ohio, and then graduated from Muskingum College in 1938. She moved to Toledo, Ohio, and worked for the Luella Cummings Home for Girls and then for Lasalle and Koch department stores until her marriage to Herbert Mumford in October 1947. She taught at Whitney Vocational High School from 1955 until 1974.
Anna was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, two sisters and her husband.
She is survived by her stepson, Edwin Mumford; her daughter-in-law, Barbara Champe Mumford; two grandsons, David Mumford (Lakshmi Raman) of Arlington, Va., and Steven Mumford (Bonnie Flaherty) of Jackson Heights, N.Y.; grandchildren, Katherine, Margaret, Arjun and Asha; four nieces; and three nephews.
An avid naturalist, Anna was a member of the Toledo Naturalists Association and Naturalist Camera Club of Toledo. She traveled extensively to U.S. national parks and severanl countries in Latin America. She also was active in AAUW and Buckeye Doll Club of Toledo.
Anna's family and friends will remember her as an encouraging presence. She had a talent for finding the best in nearly any situation and for urging others to "give it at least one more try."
The family is grateful for the compassionate care Anna received from the Woodlands staff at Meth-Wick and from UnityPoint Hospice in Cedar Rapids.
