Virgil Lee Miller, 68, of Solon, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Dec. 25, 2015, at the Iowa City VA Health Care Center.
Graveside services with military honors will be 1
p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.

Virgil was born Sept. 26, 1947, in Washington, Iowa, and graduated with the City High class of '68. Shortly thereafter, he was inducted into the U.S. Army where he served with the 300th MP Division in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in the fall of 1971. On Jan 8, 1972, he married Katharine Ward in Iowa City.
Virgil had served as chief of police in West Branch, a deputy sheriff in Johnson County, and was employed at the Iowa Medical Classification Center until 1995, when he became disabled.
Virgil enjoyed time spent golfing, fishing and behind the camera as a photographer, but most of all, he enjoyed being grandpa to his grandson, Aiden.
He is survived by his wife, Katharine; son, Drew of Solon; grandson, Aiden; sisters, Rita Babinet and Maxine Miller; brother, Joe Miller; sister-in-law, Marianne Zeigler; brothers-in-law, James Ward (Debbie) and John Ward (Linda); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, a brother-in-law, a sister-in-law, an aunt, an uncle, four nephews and a niece.
