Bower, Janice Field
Janice Field Bower, 84, of Parsonsfield, Maine, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, in her home. She was born in Armstrong, Iowa, on Nov. 4, 1925, the daughter of William H. and Florice (Minkler) Bailey.
Janice was raised in Cedar Rapids, and graduated from Franklin High School and Coe College with a degree in chemistry. She was senior class president and president of Chi Omega sorority. She further studied chemistry at Oregon State College. She wed John Lahman Bower on Sept. 12, 1947, whom she met at Coe. After moving to Massachusetts, Janice worked at Tufts University in the chemistry department for many years. She then worked at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, analyzing moon rocks from the Apollo missions. An opportunity at MIT Lincoln Labs led to a new profession as a research librarian where she spent the last 15 years of her working life. She received her Masters in Library Science from Simmons College while at MIT.
Janice is predeceased by her husband, John.
Surviving are her sister, Jean Tripp of Garland, Texas; daughter, Helen Bower of Sanford, Maine; son, David Bower and his wife, Leslie David of Parsonsfield, Maine; and a niece and a nephew.
