Samek, David John
David John Samek, 88, of The Meth-Wick Community, Cedar Rapids, died there Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. James United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Beth Straw, with military honors Visitation: one hour before the service at the church Tuesday. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Lois; his children; grandchildren; and two nieces. He was a loving, devoted father and grandfather to daughter, Eileen (Gary) Samek of Muskegon, Mich., son, Kenneth (Judith) Samek of Waterloo; and grandsons, Brian Samek of Kalamazoo and Ross and Benjamin Samek of Waterloo.
David was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, the Rev. Fredrick Samek.
David was born May 5, 1921, to Fred and Emily Samek. He was a life long resident of Cedar Rapids. David married Lois Hollan on May 23, 1948. David was a graduate of Roosevelt High School. He was employed as a technical instruction writer for 22 years for Cherry Burrell Corporation and 15 years at Iowa Manufacturing Co. During World War II he served with the 8th Air Force in the European Theater.
David was a life long member of St. James United Methodist Church where he joyfully served in many capacities. David enjoyed the last seven years living among his Meth-Wick friends.
