Shirley Olivia Hanson, 89, died Sunday, July 20, 2014, at the Meth-Wick Community. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.

Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on July 5, 1925, Shirley was raised on an acreage in rural Cedar Rapids, where she attended a country school (Edgewood No. 2) followed by Roosevelt High School in the city. Her first employment at Collins Radio during World War II was followed by retail clerk positions at the former May's Drug and the Giant Store and child care at Trickey's Bowling Alley.

Preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Stanley, (in California in 2012), Shirley relished her role as the "big sister," rejoicing always in the growth and accomplishments of her siblings, nieces and nephews and those of their children. Her travels to her mother's home in Czechoslovakia and those in the United States afforded her wonderful memories she cherished as ambulation became difficult.

She is survived by her "little sister" and best friend, Mary Ann Barry of Cedar Rapids.

Her marvelous ability at perceiving with accuracy remained true through her lifetime. Shirley's quiet manner supported much careful thought which she was reticent to share until appropriate. She faced cancer and many other challenges in her life without complaint.

Sincere gratitude is extended to the numerous Meth-Wick Community staff persons for their many warm kindnesses afforded Shirley during her time with them.

Memorials may be directed to Meth-Wick, Unity Point Hospice at St. Luke's Hospital or Christ Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids in memory of Shirley.
