Cedar Rapids man sentenced to 20 years for meth distribution

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man, who has racked up convictions in 31 separate cases, was sentenced this week to more than 20 years in federal prison for distributing methamphetamine.

Jamie Allen Medulan, 46, pleaded in October to conspiracy to distribute meth and possession of a firearm during and in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Evidence showed police officers searched a hotel room being used by Medulan on July 13 and found more than 5 kilograms of ice methamphetamine, two firearms, $31,448 in cash and other evidence of drug trafficking.

He later admitted receiving more than 50 pounds of meth from his source over the course of several months, according to court documents.

Medulan’s criminal history includes convictions in 31 cases involving theft, assault, burglary and manufacturing of meth, prosecutors said.

U.S. District Judge C.J. Williams on Thursday sentenced Medulan to 251 months in prison. He also ordered him to serve five years of supervised release following prison.

Medulan is being held in custody of the U.S. Marshals Service until he can be taken to a federal prison.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, which is the centerpiece of the U.S. Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction efforts. The strategy focuses on the most violent offenders and partners with local prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.

The case also is part of Project Guardian, the department’s initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Nydle and investigated as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force program through a cooperative effort of by the Cedar Rapids and Marion police departments, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Linn County Sheriff’s Office and Drug Enforcement Administration.
