Civility is a two way street requiring action

U.S. Rep. Rod Blum is correct that we must stand up to hateful rhetoric. Obviously, he chooses to sit when it comes to President Donald Trump. Our president has referred to Mexicans as rapists, denigrated African nations, encouraged physical assault at his rallies and made disgusting remarks about women, including his daughter. Yet Blum has not stood up to this rhetoric or wavered in his support of Trump.

I agree that the level of discourse in our nation is at a low point. No member of Congress or their family should fear death threats or physical harm. But civility is not just about words; it also is about actions. Blum has consistently opposed legislation to provide access to health care for all citizens. He has opposed all efforts to work for gun safety. He voted for the massive tax cut that ends in 10 years for the middle class, but extends in perpetuity for the wealthiest families and corporations.

Perhaps a degree of civility will return when ordinary citizens feel members of Congress view them as equals, not pawns for political gain. To answer your question, Rep. Blum, 'What tragedy has to happen before Americans can stand together and denounce hateful and dangerous rhetoric?” It already has. Trump is president.
