IOWA CITY -- It's not where he's seeded. It's where he finishes."If I'm not in Lane 4, it's a lot of motivation for me," said Iowa City High sprinter Bryson Runge. "If somebody is faster than me on paper, that's fine. I like the competition."Runge and Kole Butler paved the way as City High won the boys' division of the Forwald-Coleman Relays on Thursday at the Raffensperger Track on the City High campus. The Little Hawks compiled 121 points, outdistancing rival Iowa City West (116.5). Linn-Mar was third with 70.5."It's a big deal," Runge said. "West has beaten us so many times the last couple years. We came in here wanting to do whatever it takes to beat them."Runge won the 100 (10.99 seconds) and 200 (22.65) and anchored the Little Hawks from behind in the 400-meter relay.Only in the 100 was Runge the pre-race favorite -- on paper. And that's the way he likes it."(In terms of time), I was hoping for a little better," he said. "But winning is the ultimate goal, so I'm happy."Butler swept the hurdles events, leading off the Little Hawks' victorious shuttle hurdle relay (they won it in 59.35 seconds), motoring through the 110-meter highs in 14.71 seconds, then coming from way back to capture the 400 lows in 55.92. Butler was running fourth as he rounded the final curve, then sprinted his way to the front down the stretch."(Winning the meet), it's awesome," Butler said. "It's what we wanted to do."All told, the Little Hawks won seven events (Ladarius Taylor led the high jump field), West and Linn-Mar three apiece.West's Kaleb Greiner (400) and Daniel Gardarsson (3,200) were champions, as was its 3,200 relay. Linn-Mar was led by Kyle Hayek in the shot put, Curtis McCrary in the long jump and its 1,600-meter relay.Waukee paced a stacked girls field, winning eight events and tallying 142 points. West was next with 118 points, followed by Pleasant Valley (99) and City High (84).Two girls records were broken, both by Little Hawks. Kiera Washpun leaped 18-4 to win the long jump, and Sarah Plock ran 1:04.53 in the 400 hurdles.Plock's effort moved her to No. 1 in the state this season, according to Quik Stats.Washpun also anchored the Little Hawks' triumphant 800 relay, and City won the distance medley. West's Tia Saunders was the 400 champion, and the Women of Troy finished second in 10 events.
