Norbert Edward Schrage, 97, of Brooklyn, Iowa, died Sunday, March 27, 2016, at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, at Guernsey United Methodist Church, 409 Cleveland St., followed by a funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Interment will take place at the Guernsey Cemetery.
Norbert was born Nov. 28, 1918, in Greene, Iowa, the third youngest of 14 children born to August and Augusta (Kramer) Schrage. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II. Norbert was united in marriage to Mary Jane Schilling on June 11, 1948, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union, three daughters were born. Norbert was employed as a bookkeeper for the Downing Box Company in Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his daughters, Carol (Bennie) Salers of Brandon, Miss., and Kristine (Gerald) Slaymaker of Guernsey; eight grandchildren, Lisa (Steve) Goodanew, Mary (Steve) Darrow, Adam Chapman, Ben Salers, Jennifer (Brian) Gray, Scott (Andrea) Salers, Amy (Pepper) Bradford and Tammie Slaymaker; 14 great-grandsons; and two great-granddaughters; as well as son-in-law, Rich Chapman.
Norbert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Jane, in 2012; daughter, Linda Chapman; granddaughter, Debbie Slaymaker; eight brothers; and five sisters.
