DeAngelo to leave C.R., play in Canada

May. 24, 2011 6:13 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS – Anthony DeAngelo has decided his hockey future, and it doesn't include Cedar Rapids.
The highly regarded Cedar Rapids RoughRiders defenseman has become ex-Riders defenseman with his Tuesday decision to join the Sarnia Sting of the Major Junior Ontario Hockey League next season.
DeAngelo was the youngest player in United States Hockey League history this season when he played the first month as a 14-year-old. He played in only 28 games because of a broken kneecap suffered in a game in January.
A Boston University commitment, DeAngelo – from Sewell, N.J. – will forego college hockey since Major Junior players are paid a small stipend. Scouts believe he could be a first-round National Hockey League pick in three years if he continues his development.
A message left with DeAngelo was not immediately returned.
