Smulekoff’s will be missed in downtown

I began working for Smulekoff's during their 100th year of business. I was fortunate to be hired by Abbott Lipsky. One of the most honest, compassionate, brilliant man I ever met. He cared about the customer, employees and family, and community.
I was able to work with A.L. and Leo Smulekoff. Both to be admired and respected. They built one of the state's largest retail business. When I started as customer service manager, I was told my guideline was to please the customer. No wonder they stood for 125 years. Who can forget the jewelry department's Sol Maikon? The appliance department once dominated the area, as did the furniture and flooring departments. Many women got their first line of credit from Smulekoff's, as did many a worker. That flood was a real kick in the pants. How can we fault Ann Lipsky for closing? I sure don't. But we all will miss the last major hometown retailer in Cedar Rapids.
