Madeline Louise Mitchell passed away peacefully Friday, July 8, 2016, while at the hospice unit at Mercy Iowa City. We are thankful for their love and support. She was 97 years old, but still young at heart. She will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held Sunday, July 17, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Brosh Chapel and the Avacentre in Solon.
Madeline was born Nov. 6, 1918, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of John L. Hunter and Elizabeth (Tjaden) Hunter. She was united in marriage to David Mitchell on Aug. 2, 1952, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
In retirement, Madeline and Dave spent 25 wonderful winters in Arizona, where they enjoyed hiking, biking and swimming.
Madeline graduated from Wilson High School in Cedar Rapids. She worked at ACT in the publications department, retiring in 1981. Madeline was a volunteer at the VA Hospital in Iowa City for 25 years.
She loved homemaking, cooking and baking, birds, crossword puzzles and crafts.
Madeline is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 63 years, David; her four children, Bill (Cheryle) Mitchell of Mesa, Ariz., Lizzie (Dave) Riedesel of Wheatland and Jim (Suzanne) Mitchell and Rob (Michele) Mitchell of North Liberty; nine grandchildren, Brett (Shari), Jilian, Tori, Maggee, David, John, Linnay (Brad), Andrew and Kiara; and nine great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Chancy, Hunter, Madie, Cohen, Sawyer, Laden, Killian and Carter. She also is survived by her loving sister, Becky Phillips of Cedar Rapids.
Madeline was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Jesse, John and Henry Hunter; and sisters, Katherine Mossman and Angeline Dodd.
The family wishes to give a special thanks to Hospice Angels of Iowa City, nephew John (Sandy) Philips and neighbors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous, Monticello, Iowa.
