Brown, Marie L.
Marie L. Brown, 99 years and 349 days, passed away Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center from a short illness. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. The Rev. Beth Straw of St. James United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Mathews Claude and her best friend, Dick Frondle of Cedar Rapids; a son, Jack Brown and wife Jill (Penny) of St. Joseph, Mo.; three sisters, Genevieve (Kendel) Thompson of Ottumwa, Violet (Leon) Nichols of Grove, Okla., and Dorothy Adkins of Derby, Kan.; a brother, Lloyd Grimes of Fort Worth, Texas; grandchildren, Beverly (Dave) Myers of Atkins, Cathy Ham of Fairfax, Robert (Michelle) Mathews of Riverside, Calif., Brenda (Patrick) Quandt of Coggon, Michelle (Bret) Mason of Olathe, Kan., Shona (Kraig) Kirkwood of Turney, Mo., Laura Lake of North Kansas City, Mo.; and Brian (Jennifer) Brown of St. Joseph, Mo.; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Ralph; a sister, Alma Juanita; her husband of 64 years, Kenneth; and her great-granddaughter, Misty Hayes.
Marie was born Sept. 22, 1909, in Clio, Iowa, to Carl and Flora (Wallace) Grimes. She married Kenneth Brown on Jan. 28, 1933, in Papillion, Neb. Marie worked for Wingstern Hasley, Turner Microphone, American News and Singer Sewing. She took care of children when the grandchildren came along, and baby sat from 1954 till 2001, when she turned 92. She loved to sew and make beautiful albums and crafts. She loved people and no one was a stranger when she got done talking to them.
Marie will be greatly missed by her family and friends and those who just met her for a moment.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
