Brick Arch Winery open for business

A new winery is now open on the west end of West Branch's Main Street, transforming what had been the town's former post office into a modern, new venue. The Brick Arch Winery takes its name from the iconic brick arch, originally built in 1907, that frames the building's main entrance.
It's interesting to note that as the building was being renovated, it actually collapsed. But owners Ilene Lande and John McNutt were not going to give up that easily. They dug out the bricks and used them to reconstruct the arch, based on the 1907 design. They also built a sizable addition to the west. The husband and wife team officially opened the winery for business in March 2011.
Once the arch draws you inside, you're sure to be surprised by the building's expansive size. Lande explains, “It feels bigger than you expect it to be once you step inside the three-level space.” The Brick Arch Winery can accommodate special events, like weddings, for up to 175 people. The cellar room offers a private space for approximately 50 people, while the first floor sunrooms provide scenic views of Hoover Park.
The winery features live music almost every Sunday and Wednesday night.
“We like to think of it as an ideal place for a date night,” Lande says.
Come for the ambience and live entertainment, but don't forget the wine. “We offer the driest spectrum of wines in Iowa,” says Lande. “We specialize in Chardonel and Chambourcin wines; French hybrids designed to tolerate a Midwestern climate.”
Although the winery has the look and feel of a fine restaurant, they only offer a limited menu including small plate foods like cheese, fruit and bread. Desserts are sometimes available and full meals are offered for special events and some holidays.
The Brick Arch Winery, 116 W. Main St., is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, noon to 6 p.m., Wednesday noon to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday noon to 7 p.m. and, Sunday noon to 5 p.m.
