Paul D. “Doc” Tenney D.O., 80, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, June 9, 2013, at his home.
He was born Sept. 27, 1932, in Palo, Iowa, son of the Rev. William C. and Edith (Davidson) Tenney. He married Florence “Dutch” Thompson in 1965 in Rockford, Ill.; they later divorced. He married Annette Barnard in 1971 and they later divorced. He then married Janet Thompson in 1984.
He graduated from Mount Vernon High School and attended Cornell College. In 1965, he graduated from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines. He opened a private practice in Glidden, Iowa and shortly after, served with the Knoxville VA Health Care System as senior grade officer. In 1971, he went to work for UNI Medical Service, where he practiced for 23 years, retiring in 1994. During medical school, he worked as a mechanic at an import car garage in Des Moines, where he began his racing career and preparing engines for Alfa Romeo. He was also a jazz musician, playing at numerous local venues and developed a woodwind mouthpiece refacing business, serving elite customers worldwide.
Surviving are his wife, Janet Thompson; two sons, Steven (Mindy) and Michael (Olya); three grandsons, Brian, Dustin and Joshua Tenney; a stepgranddaughter, Lisa Strueva; three great-grandsons, Nolan, Nathan and Clark Tenney; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sybil and Jerry Kintz, Phyllis Thompson, Kathy and Gary Martin, Bill Thompson, Gordon and Michelle Thompson, Tod and Pam Thompson; a niece, Patricia (Bill) Hewig; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Craig D. Tenney; nephew, Craig C. Tenney; and uncle, Philip Tenney.
Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls.
