Iowa’s Uhl has soccer dilemma
Jun. 26, 2014 11:20 pm
NORTH LIBERTY - Dominique Uhl was the only Iowa men's basketball player not rooting for the United States soccer team Thursday, and he heard from plenty of people on Twitter because of it.
'Everybody like tweeted at me and tried to come at me, kind of,” Uhl said. 'I was confident Germany was going to win.”
Uhl, a 6-foot-9 incoming freshman forward, hails from Germany and moved to the United States two years ago. He openly rooted for the Germans, but said, 'I'm glad they both moved to the second round.”
Uhl is the only newcomer who has competed in the Prime Time League so far this summer. Freshman guard Brady Ellingson injured his foot, and sophomore guard Trey Dickerson will arrive on campus this weekend.
BACK TO EUROPE
Juniors Mike Gesell and Adam Woodbury head back to Europe this summer as a member of the USA East Coast traveling basketball team. They will compete in the 2014 Four Nations Cup in Estonia and Finland, Aug. 4-7
'We're taking it as a learning experience,” Woodbury said. 'We're playing against some good competition out there, national teams even. I'm just trying to take some things away from it, trying to get better every day, just give it the respect it deserves.”
Both players toured England and France as part of Iowa basketball team's European tour last August. Gesell couldn't play because of a broken hand suffered in last year's Prime Time League.
'It will be a lot of fun,” Gesell said. 'I'll get to play against pros, get to play against grown men. It's going to be a great experience for me, especially since I didn't get to play in our last European trip.”
Other players on the trip include Maryland's Damonte Dodd, Syracuse's B.J. Johnson and Tyler Robertson, South Carolina's Tyrone Johnson and guard Sindarius Thornwell and Arkansas' Dusty Hannahs.
