C.R. Panthers 2nd in state tournament

DES MOINES - The Cedar Rapids Panthers 8th grade girls' basketball team placed second at the AAU state tournament late last month.

The Panthers won their first four games - beating Team Iowa, the Illinois Stunners, Kingdom Hoops Red and All Iowa Attack - before losing to Kingdom Hoops Elite in the championship game 45-41.

The Panthers' Kennedy Dighton was named to the all-tournament team.

C.R.'s Beruitti an AIM all-stater

Carly Berutti, a junior at Cedar Rapids Xavier, has been named to the AIM all-state team.

AIM is the official youth program of the Amateur Trapshooting Association.

AIM “encourages good sportsmanship and personal responsibility through competition while establishing the foundation to making trapshooting a lifelong avocation.”

The AIM all-state teams represent the best of the best AIM shooters. All AIM teams are based on AIM membership and the total number of members in the category/zone/state. AIM all-stars are the highest level of shooting recognition, followed by all-zone, then all-state.

Chung wins table tennis title

CEDAR RAPIDS - Jedidah Chung won the overall title last weekend a the Stonebridge Church table tennis tournament.

Four events were held at the tournament.

The intermediate open consisted of five round-robin groups with four players in each group.

Chung won with a tight fifth-game victory in a best-of-five finals over Iulian Crutu. Andre Gallet won the second group, beating John Walton, and Matt Wickoff bested Vallerie Buffard in the thirds division. Bill Wilding defeated Rion Schwarz in the fourths final.

Riley Walton won the eighth grade-and-under title. Michael McGrew was second and Ryan May claimed third.

Jeff Donald won the six-player high school division. Halim Jeong finished second and Michael Neese third.

The 60-and-over winner was Jarol Duerksen, who went undefeated in the round robin event, including a victory over his wife, Leah.

She placed second and Judy Schwarz finished third.
