EMERSON, Iowa (AP) - The wife of an Army sergeant from western Iowa says he's been killed in Afghanistan.
The Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/MFHnvq) that 25-year-old James Skalberg had graduated in 2005 from Nishna Valley High School in Hastings. He'd grown up in Emerson.
Jessica Skalberg told the newspaper on Thursday that her husband was a "loving, good-hearted man."
The Defense Department has yet to publicly report the sergeant's death. Jessica Skalberg declined to say what she'd been told about the circumstances of his passing. She would say only, "He passed away serving his country."
She and their 11-month-old son survive him.
