LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Iowa football team beat Nebraska, 38-17, on Friday to finish the regular season 8-4.
The Hawkeyes forced three turnovers and stopped a fake punt on fourth down, consistently giving the team's offense good field position. Seven of Iowa's first 14 drives began in Nebraska territory.
The senior linebacker trio of Anthony Hitchens, James Morris, and Christian Kirksey spearheaded the defensive effort. Morris and Hitchens both recorded first-quarter interceptions, and Kirksey forced a second-half fumble. The three also put heavy pressure on Nebraska quarterback Ron Kellogg II, who completed just 19 of 37 passes for 199 yards.
Iowa also largely bottled up Cornhusker running back Ameer Abdullah, limiting him to just 3.7 yards per carry.
Mark Weisman ran for 92 yards and two touchdowns for Iowa. Quarterback Jake Rudock went 9-15 for 126 yards and two touchdowns before suffering a leg injury and leaving the game.
Nebraska cut Iowa's lead to 24-17 in the fourth quarter, and with backup quarterback C.J. Beathard forced into action, the Hawkeyes lead seemed in trouble. But Jordan Canzeri took off for a 37-yard run that set up Weisman's second touchdown run, and Iowa regained control.
