Iowa notes: Career day for Keenan Davis, Brett Greenwood reaction
Sep. 10, 2011 7:02 pm
AMES - Iowa junior wide receiver Keenan Davis caught a career-high five passes for 95 yards in a 44-41 overtime loss at Iowa State.
Davis, a Cedar Rapids native, hauled in a 23-yard strike in second overtime to tie the game and send it into a third overtime. Davis caught the pass inside the cornerback and raced through the secondary for his first touchdown this season and
"It was just a hook route," Davis said. "(Quarterback James Vandenberg) made a good throw, and I just tried to make a play."
Davis also hauled in a 32-yard pass on Iowa's first drive that led to the Hawkeyes' first touchdown.
"It was just a third down where if they press, we're going to go," Vandenberg said. "We were able to hit him down the sideline and convert that first third down."
"It's a look at the line of scrimmage," Davis said. "Any time anybody's pressing on us, we feel like we can go deep on them. Us, me, Marvin (McNutt), Kevonte (Martin-Manley) feel like we can beat corners off the line, so that's one of the things we want."
Davis did drop a key pass in the third overtime. Facing third-and-6 at the Iowa State 21, Davis ran a crossing route. Vandenberg threw a perfect ball and it bounced off Davis incomplete. Iowa settled for a field goal, and Iowa State scored a touchdown on its next possession to win.
"That's a routine catch everybody should make," Davis said.
Vandenberg said he has a lot of confidence in Davis.
"He's a great talent, and I've known that for a long time," Vandenberg said. "He's a great player and I trust him with every ball I throw out there. I trust that he can make a play out there. He did a great job out there for us today.
"Drops happen. If it happened in the first quarter, nobody would be talking about it. It's not a big deal. We clearly could have done a lot of different things to clear up this game."
THINKING OF BRETT
Iowa coaches and players were kept abreast of former player Brett Greenwood's health. Greenwood, a four-year starter who was recently cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers, collapsed during a workout at Pleasant Valley High School of an apparent heart attack.
Greenwood was airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on Friday night and he is in an induced coma, according to the Quad-City Times.
Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz said he doesn't much about Greenwood or his condition but said, "I think we're all just keeping Brett ... in our thoughts."
Greenwood, 23, played free safety for Iowa last year. Iowa defensive tackle Mike Daniels said he and other Iowa players are concerned for their former teammate.
"He's a very intelligent man, a smart football player," Daniels said. "So we're just praying for him that all's well."
INJURY TIME
Iowa safety Jordan Bernstine was ill on Friday and held out of Saturday's game. Iowa linebacker Dakota Getz returned from offseason shoulder surgery to suffer a season-ending knee injury on the opening kickoff.
