Stubbs, Waunetta M.

Waunetta M. Stubbs, 91, longtime resident of Iowa City, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at the Greenwood Manor Care Center, Iowa City. Memorial Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Paul Akin officiating. Following the service, family and friends are invited for a reception in the fellowship hall of the church (Sunday parking ordinance will be in effect for streets around the church). There will be a period of visitation at the church one hour before the services.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her memory.

Waunetta Mae Sipple was born June 4, 1918, in Somerset, Neb., the daughter of LeRoy and Laura (Winborn) Sipple. Following graduation from high school, she attended and graduated with a degree in Nursing from St. Luke's Nursing School in Cedar Rapids. During World War II, she served in the United States Army serving abroad as a nurse to the troops. Returning to this area, she married Clifford J. Stubbs on May 29, 1946, in Mount Vernon. With the exception of a short period of living in Philadelphia, the couple resided in the Iowa City area their entire married lives. For many years, she worked as a nurse at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, retiring in 1980.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, White Shrine, Eastern Star, R.O.A.L., and Military Affairs. She was the first female recipient of the John Hayek Award. She enjoyed her gardening, sewing, crocheting. But many believe that she was put on this earth so she could care for so many. Didn't matter if they were family, friends, patients, or total strangers; she cared for all!

Her family includes her three children, Charles “Chuck” Stubbs of St. Louis, Mo., Ward Stubbs of Cedar Falls, and Barbara Dennison of Torrance, Calif.; three grandchildren, Summer (R.J.) Meyer, Brock Stubbs, and Storm Dennison; four great-grandchildren, Kylee, Madison, Asher, and Siri; and her sister, Irene Frazier of Louisiana.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cliff; daughter-in-law, Candi; and five brothers and sisters.
