Meyer, Charles D.
Charles D. Meyer, 88, of Holy Cross, died at 11:26 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque. Friends and relatives of Charles may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, and after 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Reiff Funeral Home in Farley, where a wake service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Services for Charles will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, with the Rev. Marvin J. Bries officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Charles was born Dec. 18, 1924, in Greeley, Iowa, son of August and Verena (Ulbrich) Meyer. He received his education in the Greeley area schools. On Feb. 19, 1952, he was united in marriage to Rita M. Feldmann at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Worthington. She preceded him in death on Jan. 15, 2003.
He farmed in the Holy Cross area and also worked at John Deere Dubuque Works in the foundry for 30 years until his retirement in 1986. His co-workers fondly referred to him as “Chocolate Charlie.”
Charlie and Rita enjoyed traveling and traveled to all 50 states, Germany, Belgium, Europe, Switzerland and Italy. He was an avid reader and loved gardening. After his retirement he enjoyed delivering trailers for Behnke Enterprises for several years.
He was a member of Holy Cross Parish and UAW Local 94.
He is survived by three children, Verl (Nancy) Meyer of Eldridge, Connie (Ron) Kaiser of Cuba City, Wis., and Carol (Matt) Kaiser of Potosi, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; 7 1/2 great-grandchildren; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Rose Feldmann of Monticello, Rosela Feldmann and Imogene Feldmann, both of Dyersville, Grace Feldmann of Worthington, Mary (Louis) Ronnebaum of Earlville, Delmar and Mary Lou Feldmann of Epworth, Leonard and Caroline Feldmann of Cuba City, Wis., and Margie Lehmann of Farley.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Donald C. Meyer on Jan. 20, 2006; three sisters, Delores Kauffmann, Millie Feldmann and Agnes Meyer; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Lucille (Al “Wish”) Vonderhaar, Marie Hall-Strief, Francis, Raymond, Andrew, Leo, Lawrence, Donald, Carl, Tom Feldmann and Doyle Kauffmann.
