James Edward McCabe, 70, of Coralville, died Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Windmill Manor following an extended illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, April 28, at St. Thomas More Church, with Father Walter Helms officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Lensing Oak Hill Funeral Service, Coralville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice Compassus of Cedar Rapids or St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Jim was born Feb. 20, 1944, in Iowa City, the son of Robert and Carol (DeBruyne) McCabe. He was a 1962 graduate of Re-gina High School and the Iowa City Commercial College. Jim was united in marriage to Leta Lenz on May 7, 1966, at St. Mary's Church, Iowa City.
Jim was a dedicated worker for the Iowa City Water Department and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in the Shipping and Receiving Department for 26 years, retiring in 2011.
Jim was a member of County Johnson Irish, Eagles Lodge and the Knights of Columbus Marquette Council 842, where he had held many offices, including Grand Knight, financial secretary and had been an official delegate to attend the 100th Annual Convention of the Supreme Council in New Haven, Conn. Jim also was a member of the Bishop Cosgrove Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.
Among his many travels were to Ireland, Alaska and Hawaii. Jim's favorite places were Branson, Mo., where he loved to watch country music shows, and Lake of the Ozarks to relax and watch the speedboats. Jim was also an avid Hawkeye football fan.
Survivors include his wife, Leta; their children, Tamara McCabe of Coralville and Timothy (Susan) McCabe of North Liberty; two grand-daughters, Caitlin and Jaden McCabe; and his sister, Marilyn (Tom) Meade of North Liberty.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
The family is grateful for the cards and continued visits of so many good friends during Jim's illness. Good friends are like stars….You don't always see them, but you know they are always there.
