Gar McCormick, 66, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Ave. SW, Cedar
Rapids, where the family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until service time. Inurnment: Troy Mills Cemetery, Troy Mills.
Garland Dean McCormick was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Feb. 24, 1948, to Hubert and Ruby (Carson) McCormick. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1966. He was then offered a scholarship to play football at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls and later at Washburn University in Kansas, where he received his B.A. degree in physical rehabilitation.
Gar is survived by his daughter, Ami Rosen of Cedar Falls, and her daughter, Sarah; brothers, Spencer McCormick of the Philippines and Craig (Cheryl) McCormick and Scott (Karen Pierce) Kelsey, both of Cedar Rapids; his sister, Etta (Jim) Gilchrist of Glenwood; nephews, Travis, Brian, Brett, Daniel, Kevin and Nathan; and nieces, Kristin, Brooke and Maggie.
Gar was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Douglas Kelsey; and longtime companion, Helen Waldo.
A memorial fund has been established in Gar's memory.
