Soukup, John J.
John J. Soukup, 60, of North Liberty, passed away Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. A Memorial Service will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, with a Celebration of Life gathering beginning at 1 p.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Alzheimer's Association.
John was born March 22, 1953, in Decorah, Iowa, the son of James and Mary (Andera) Soukup. John married Lesley Gardner in 1980, and they have two children.
John was a wonderful husband and father. He loved to garden, fish, ride his bicycle and collect rocks. He was a graduate of The University of Iowa and a huge college sports fan.
He was employed at The Cedar Rapids Gazette until he could no longer work. He also served on the North Liberty Council from 1997-2004.
Survivors include his loving wife, Lesley; his two children, Lisa (Steve) Nelson of West Branch and Jesse (Emily Hobbs) Soukup of Coralville; two grandsons, Ian and Cael Nelson; his father, James Soukup of Decorah; two sisters, Diane (Peter) Kriener and Karen (Darrell) North; a brother, Todd (Jan) Soukup; his mother-in-law, Barbara Foster, and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Soukup; his niece, Annette Kriener; and his nephew, Peter Kriener.
