Martinek, James O.
James O. Martinek, 73, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Memorial Mass: 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m., with a vigil service beginning at 4 p.m. Friday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. Inurnment: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Military Honors by American Legion Marion Post 298.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce; his children, John (Kelly) Martinek, Timothy (Roxann) Martinek, Teresa Martinek and Jason (Sandra) Martinek; grandchildren, Joey, Calla and Nathaniel Martinek; and siblings, Eleanor (Robert) Hill, Sister Ann Martinek (Florence), Mildred (George) Jacoby, Mark (Mary Lou) Martinek, Julius (Jeannie) Martinek and Daniel (Susan) Martinek.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Valerian Martinek, James Martinek, Lillian Kruger and Eileen McCallen.
James was born July 20, 1940, in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Mary (Kuhn) Martinek. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served between 1959 and 1962. Jim married Joyce McVay on Nov. 7, 1964, in Hopkinton, Iowa. Jim worked as a packinghouse supervisor for 48 years at Wilson's and Farmstead in Cedar Rapids and Tyson's in Omaha. James was an avid cyclist and enjoyed riding with his family. He loved all children, his greatest joy being his grandchildren.
