A van caught on fire in rural Iowa City at around 10:15 a.m. this morning, sending dark plumes of smoke into the sky and leaving a lingering smell of burned rubber near Taft Avenue and Cedar Lane.
The driver and soul occupant of the van said that she had smelled a faint odor of gas last night, but had an old hose replaced on the van by her husband and thought that everything was fine.
While driving this morning, she saw flames come out from underneath the hood. The woman was able to get out of the van safely and called 911. She was shaken up, but otherwise uninjured.
The van is a complete loss, and it appears that asphalt may have been damaged on Cedar Lane. It is currently unclear what specifically caused the blaze.
