To the editor:
While abortion is a safe and legal procedure in this country, access to it has become a major roadblock for people looking to exercise their right to make that decision across the nation and in Iowa.
The number of clinics has dwindled considerably as a result of restrictive regulations that are punitive and medically unfounded, resulting in women having to travel great distances at considerable expense and hardship. For those with means, these roadblocks are annoying, but surmountable. But as is always the case, the playing field is not level for people who are younger or experiencing financial difficulties.
The non-profit Iowa Abortion Access Fund (formerly the Medical Aid Fund), has been in existence for 40 years and was started in Cedar Rapids by local men and women who wanted to give a helping hand to those in need of financial assistance to obtain an abortion. Our sole purpose is to provide this funding. As an all volunteer organization with extremely low overhead, we are always in need of support. If you are fed-up with this constant push against a woman's right to choose and would like more information on ways you can help, please go to iaafund.org.
