Hanssen, Paul Arthur
Paul Arthur Hanssen, 93, a civil engineer with the County of San Diego, Calif., died Nov. 10, 2009, at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in San Diego, from complications of a heart condition. Interment will be made in Fort Rosancrans National Cemetery, San Diego County.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Hanssen Jones of Washington, Iowa; and a brother, George L. Hanssen of Washington, D.C.
Paul Hanssen was born June 13, 1916, on a farm near Monticello, Iowa.
He was a graduate of Monticello Public Schools and attended the University of Iowa. He permanently moved to San Diego, Calif., in 1939 and was employed by Convair Aircraft Co. and then by the County of San Diego as a civil engineer. He entered the Navy (Seabees) in 1942, serving in Hawaii, Midway Island, the Philippines, and Guam. He engaged in Army and Marine airfield and building construction.
After the war he returned to his position with the County of San Diego as civil engineer in charge of construction. He married Alice Irene Williams in 1952. She died in October 1964. He subsequently married Margaret Smathers, who also was employed by the County of San Diego. She died Oct. 24, 2009.
