Gerken, Daniel John
Daniel John Gerken, 77, of Waterloo, died Sunday, July 21, 2013, at Denver Sunset Home, Denver.
He was born May 5, 1936, in Dubuque, son of Ewald and Anna Schumacher Gerken. He married Joyce Suzanne Murphy Aug. 18, 1956, in Dubuque. She died March 13, 2010.
Mr. Gerken graduated from Loras Academy in 1954 and the DeVry University in 1956. He was employed with Northwestern Bell Telephone, until his retirement. He was in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1952 to 1962.
Survivors include two sons, Paul (Cindy) Gerken of Cedar Rapids and Dave (Sue) Gerken of Apple Valley, Minn.; two daughters, Danette Shook of Denver and Marianne (Bob) Stalberger of Decorah; eight grandchildren, Mike, Jillyn and Nick (Heather) Gerken, Katie and Darcey Shook and Jackson, Martin and Shelby Stalberger; two great-grandchildren, Sean Redmond and Malia Burton; two brothers, Bill (Donna) Gerken of Farley and Ewald Gerken of Cascade; two sisters, Dolores Gerken of Farley and Mary Temple of Tulsa, Okla.; and two sisters-in-law, Joan Gerken of Naperville, Ill. and Marlene Gerken of Dubuque.
Preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Roger Shook; three brothers, Donald (Ann), Adrian and Loras; three sisters, Louise (Wilfred) Coakley, Theresa (Donald) McCoy and Joan (Vernon) Larsen; a sister-in-law, Beth Gerken; and a brother-in-law, John Temple.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Edward Catholic Church with entombment in Mount Olivet Mausoleum, where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, assisted by the Iowa Honor Guard. Public visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty - Waychoff - Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, Waterloo, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary. Visitation also for an hour before services Friday at the church.
