Review home insurance, account for belongings

For many people, it takes a disaster to bring to mind their insurance and whether or not they have proper coverage. In the aftermath of the Moore, Okla., tornado, people in Eastern Iowa may be wondering what they can do to better prepare for the worst.
To begin, all homeowners and renters should have proper insurance coverage. This includes making sure your home is insured for the amount it would cost to rebuild rather than just its value. Also, make sure you have the right coverage for your belongings - valuable possessions may need additional coverage.
All homeowners and renters should create and regularly update a home inventory. In the event of a loss, this inventory can mean a smoother claims process and reduced stress when trying to replace lost items. Make sure this information is securely stored and provide your agent with a copy. Finally, it is important to review your insurance coverage and home inventory every year to make sure it is up-to-date.
