Bond set at $1 million in Waterloo murder case
Dec. 18, 2011 6:30 am
A judge has set bond at $1 million for a Waterloo man charged with first-degree murder.
Black Hawk County Sheriff's deputies walked 21-year-old Montez Caples into a courtroom in handcuffs at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning for his initial appearance.
A judge told the court he believed there was probable cause to move forward with the case. A preliminary hearing was set for Dec. 27.
Police believe Caples pulled the trigger on 34-year-old Robert Shannon of Parkersburg, killing him inside a 2002 Hyundai. An autopsy revealed Shannon died from a gunshot wound to the head. His body was discovered inside a car on Wednesday.
According to the criminal complaint, several witnesses identified Caples as the killer. They reported seeing Caples upset about a verbal altercation Shannon had with an acquaintance of Caples, who was arrested on Thursday.
Waterloo police investigators said they did not expect to make any more arrests in the case.
