Wheeler, Richard
Richard Wheeler, 68, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, in Rehab of Allison Care Center, Allison, Iowa. Memorial services will 11 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his stepfather, Robert Adams of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Richard was born Aug. 8, 1942, in Marshalltown, Iowa, and was a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington High School in 1960 and from Upper Iowa University, with a bachelor's degree in English and chemistry. Dick was a high school sports official for over 30 years.
He belonged to the Cedar Rapids Athletic Officials Association. He officiated baseball, basketball, football and volleyball, and also officiated various sports for the Cedar Rapids Recreation Association. Dick was a great friend of the Regis/Xavier Athletic programs and volunteered his time to the boy's basketball teams for over 30 years and was the team statistician. Dick was also assigned sports official for the Cedar Rapids Catholic Parish Leagues Sports programs. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
A memorial fund has been established by the family.
