Paup, a star linebacker at UNI from 1986 to 1990, played for 10 years in the NFL with Green Bay, Buffalo, Jacksonville and Minnesota. He led the league in sacks in 1995, when he was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year as a member of the Bills.
Paup has been a member of the UNI coaching staff since 2013.
During his time at UNI, Paup coached Karter Schult, the 2016 FCS Defensive Player of the Year after a 17-sack season, and Xavier Williams, an all-conference tackle in 2013 and 2014 now with the NFL's Arizona Cardinals.
The Golden Gophers play at Iowa on Oct. 28, 2017.
Earlier this offseason, UNI co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Ryan Mahaffey left his alma mater to become tight ends coach at Western Kentucky.
