Walter Huk, 97, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday morning, Aug. 28, 2016, at Evergreen Estates II Residential Care Center. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church by Father Christopher Podhajsky. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 Second St. SE and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the church. A Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Rosary begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Walter is survived by two sons, John and wife LuAnn and David and wife Tracy, all of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Tracy (Craig) Zachman, Amy (Matt) Like, Zachary (Erica) Huk, Brian Huk and Adam Huk; and four great-grandchildren, Mariyah, Morgan, Makenna and Walter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sofia; his son, Peter; parents; one sister; and one brother.
Walter was born Feb. 8, 1919, in Dobkowice, Poland. He married Sofia T. Hnatyk on June 15, 1946, in Ludwigsberg, Germany. Sofia died July 22, 2015. Walter and Sofia came to the United States in 1950 and lived in West Point, Iowa, before moving to Cedar Rapids. Walter had worked for Highway Equipment Co. and Iowa Manufacturing Co. as a welder. He was later employed at Sears & Roebuck Co., until his retirement in 1983.
Walter was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was a life member of Knights of Columbus Council 909 and also Bowen General Assembly 269 Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, where he had served as faithful navigator. Walter was a member of Cadets of St. George Branch 45 F.C.S.L.A. (formerly Catholic Workman) and Lodge Cedar 7 W.F.L.A.
Walter enjoyed fishing, gardening and bowling.
Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Mercy.
