Chong, Audrey I
Audrey I Chong, 81, of Iowa City, died peacefully while under hospice care at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on Tuesday, April 12, 2011. No services are planned at this time. The family kindly requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Mercy Hospital Foundation. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is handling arrangements.
Audrey was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, on Feb. 11, 1930, the daughter of Joseph E. and Winifred (Buckley) Brenton. She received her education in England, training and working as a nurse and midwife for 12 years. Moving to Chicago in 1955, she married Arnold Chong on June 25, 1957. The couple moved to Iowa City in 1958, where Audrey worked to raise her family. She volunteered at Horn Elementary School for more than 30 years.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Arnold Chong; daughters, K. Patricia Chong (Mark Gomez) of Iowa City, and M. Shirley Chong (James Isaacs) of Grinnell; son, Jayhong Andrew Chong (Magdalene Moran) of Boston, Mass.; grandchildren, Andrew Gomez, Mark Gomez, Lillian Grace Chong and Ptolemy Thomas Chong; and sister, Shirley Brice of East Sussex, England.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Patricia.
