Melvin H.L. Lehrman, 90, child of God and lifelong farmer, was called from this life during his last harvest season on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, at Clarence Nursing Home. Funeral services will be Saturday, Oct. 29, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Stanwood, with the Rev. William Traphagan officiating. Burial will follow at Stanwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence.
Born Sept. 10, 1926, Melvin was the fifth of six children born to Paul and Ida (Luedemann) Lehrman. He received his education in Stanwood. Melvin and Martha Backes were married in Keystone on Sept. 15, 1946, and celebrated 60 years together. They lived on and farmed the family farm where Melvin grew up. Melvin was able to help with the farming, even though "retired," through age 85.
Melvin was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Stanwood; a member of the Charlois Association and the Lutheran Laymen's League for several years; and he and Martha squaredanced for 39 years. Melvin danced his last dances when he was 85.
Survivors include his children, Allen Lehrman, Kevin and Marilyn Lehrman, Kelvin Lehrman, Royce and Sandi Lehrman and LaVon and Richard Boesenberg; grandchildren and families: Laura and William Schaffer and Amanda, Jonathon and Emily; Greg and Courtney Lehrman; Keith and MaryAnn Lehrman and Mayson, Addyson and Karson; and Kelly and Roy Stillwagon and Annika and Brooke; his brother, Arnold and Doris Lehrman; sisters-in-law, Alice Heitshusen, Luella Scott, Velma and Ivan Butt and Frances Magdefrau; many nieces and nephews; good friend, Linda Althaus; and the Clarence Senior Living family over the last three years and four months.
Preceding Melvin in death were his wife, Martha, in 2007; daughter, Gayle; grandson, Jeff Lehrman; his parents; siblings and spouses: Herbert and Florence Lehrman, Alma and Raymond Hansen, Louise and Larry Siebels and Helen and Buell Jackson; and brothers-in-law, Edgar Heitshusen, John D. Scott, Don Magdefrau and Franklin Backes.
In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials may be directed to the Lutheran Laymen's League and Clarence Nursing Home.
