Farmers All Natural Creamery in Wellman has voluntarily recalled whole chocolate milk due to concerns that at least some of the product may not have been properly pasteurized.
The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship said the recall is specific to whole chocolate milk with expiration dates of Oct. 5, 2013, and Oct. 7, 2013. The products included in the recall are being marketed under the names Kalona Super Natural and World Direct.
The state agency conducted laboratory tests on the finished product and the results tested positive for residual phosphatase. That indicated that the milk may not have been properly pasteurized and could present a risk if consumed.
The whole chocolate milk was sold in 32-ounce (quart) containers and 64-ounce (1/2 gallon) containers. The milk with the Oct. 5 expiration date was bottled on Sept. 16 and the milk with the Oct. 7 expiration date was bottled on Sept. 18.
All distributers have been notified and milk is being pulled from shelves. If the public has any concerns they should return the milk to the store it was purchased or contact Farmers All Natural Creamery at (319) 646-2004. The milk should not be consumed.
The milk was distributed locally by the following distributors: Fareway stores in Iowa City and North Liberty, Freeman Foods in Wellman, Henry's in Homestead, JW's Foods in Kalona, Sprouts Unlimited in Marion, The Egg Basket in Martelle and United Natural Foods in Iowa City.
