John Steven (Steve) Hornstein, 63, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2015, from complications after hip replacement surgery. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories with burial to follow. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. In addition, an open house/Celebration of Life will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 27, in the Windridge West Lounge (Western Home Communities), 5311 Hyacinth, Cedar Falls.
Steve was born Dec. 14, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of John D. and Janet (Wieland) Hornstein. The family moved to Monticello in 1957, where he graduated from Monticello Community High School in 1970. He then attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, graduating in 1974 with a business degree. He went to work for the city of Cedar Falls, where he was deputy city clerk until retirement in 2007.
Steve is survived by his brother, Scott (Joyce) of Huxley.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents.
Steve loved athletics and maintained detailed memories of every football and baseball game that he was involved in. He especially enjoyed golf and liked to compete with his dad, brother and sister-in-law. He often traveled with family, spending time sightseeing and attended many art festivals. He was an avid collector, never passing on the chance to complete a special edition of almost anything. However, primarily Steve enjoyed visiting with people. He was truly a friend to all, eager to listen and talk to anyone as if part of their family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Steve's memory to Western Home Foundation, Cedar Falls or Deafinitely Dogs! (dogs for people with disabilities), Cedar Rapids.
