A Big Ten team in College World Series? Yes!

Jun. 9, 2013 3:37 pm
Live long enough and you'll see everything. Other than better infrastructure, a reversal of the damage mankind is doing to the environment, a global reduction of nuclear weapons -- but enough of that tripe.
I'm talking about a Big Ten baseball team -- the swingin' Hoosiers of Indiana -- earning a spot into the 2013 College World Series.
Indiana swept host Florida State in two straight games in their super regional to advance to Omaha, and this is newsworthy. The Hoosiers became the first Big Ten team to earn a CWS berth since Michigan in 1984.
So it can be done. Since 1985, the CWS has welcomed Cal State-Fullerton 12 times. Also appearing in Omaha since the Michigan team of Barry Larkin were The Citadel, Georgia Southern, Indiana State, Kent State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Maine, Missouri State, Pepperdine, Stony Brook, Tulane, UC Irvine, Wichita State ... and, of course, a slew of teams from the ACC, SEC, Pac-12 and Big 12.
Finally, the Big Ten is returning. Just a few weeks ago, Indiana (48-14) won its first Big Ten championship since 1949, and won an outright league-title for the first time since 1932. This is only IU's third NCAA tourney appearance.
The Hoosiers' roster consists of far more players from northern states than not, and nine from Indiana itself. Head coach Tracy Smith (@HoosierBaseball) is in his eighth season at IU.
So it can be done, Iowa.
