Video -- Barta, Ferentz (first post + transcript)
Marc Morehouse
Dec. 14, 2010 12:17 pm
Iowa athletics director Gary Barta talks about the reason for the press conference. Coach Kirk Ferentz talks about the dismissal, mutual, of running back Jewel Hampton and the suspension of running back Adam Robinson. He also talks about his philosophy for drug testing. Iowa had 92 football players tested this year.
Barta talks about the levels of testing -- NCAA, Big Ten and the University of Iowa, which started testing athletes in 1988. Iowa doesn't have to drug test student athletes, but it chooses to do so. Iowa spends $70,000 to manage that program. The goal, Barta says, is education, deterrent and proactive approach to get ahead of athletes who test positive.
Barta talks about checking Iowa's drug testing and looking for ways to improve. When an athlete tests positive, Barta wants to find that athlete help. UI counseling looks at helping athletes who test positive. At just short of two minutes, Barta says no other athletes are involved and they don't expect anymore to be suspended for Iowa's Insight Bowl appearance opposite Missouri.
Barta and Ferentz are asked if an athlete refused to take a drug test. They didn't want to get into the specifics or outcomes. If a player refuses a test, it's considered a positive drug test. First order after a positive is counseling. Ferentz talks about the disappointment of Derrell Johnson-Koulianos' arrest.
