Jun. 5, 2013 3:30 pm
The Midwest League announced rosters for its upcoming Summer All-Star Classic, and the Cedar Rapids Kernels are very well represented.
The club has eight players on the Western Division team, including position starters D.J. Hicks (first base), Jorge Polanco (second base), Byron Buxton (outfield) and Adam Brett Walker (outfield). Reserve position players selected for the game, which is June 18 in Dayton, Ohio, are third baseman Travis Harrison and shortstop Niko Goodrum.
Others Kernels all-stars, as elected by vote of league managers, are pitchers Tyler Duffey and Jose Berrios. Duffey won't be able to play because he was officially promoted Wednesday to high-Class A Fort Myers, the parent Minnesota Twins announced.
The right-hander has been C.R.'s most consistent pitcher, going 3-2 with a 2.78 earned run average in nine starts and 58 1/3 innings. A reliever, Soliman was 3-1 with a save and 5.28 ERA.
Added to the Kernels' roster are pitchers Caleb Brewer and Christian Powell.
Brewer was signed as a minor-league free agent by the Twins after being released by the Atlanta Braves. He was 0-1 with a 4.01 ERA in 15 relief appearances for high-A Lynchburg.
Powell joins the Kernels from extended spring training. He was an eighth-round draft pick last year out of College of Charleston.
